http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only

8 Navigation Tricks Every iPad User Needs to Know

ipad-air
Like any piece of technology, iPads aren’t completely obvious when you first pick them up. They have their own language of gestures, swipes, and button presses you should learn to become more comfortable using them.
None of these gestures are complicated, but they’re also not immediately obvious. The four and five-finger multitasking gestures are particularly useful, but may take you some time to discover when you first sit down with an iPad.

Four-Finger Swipe Left or Right – Switch Apps

You can quickly switch between recently used apps with a quick gesture — think of this almost like the iPad version of Alt+Tab on Windows.
To do this, simply place four fingers anywhere on your screen and swipe to the left or right. Your current app will appear to slide to the left or right, and another recently used app will appear. Perform this gesture several times in a row to quickly move between apps.
This gesture is very helpful if you’re regularly switching between a few apps, as it allows you to skip the app switcher screen.

Five-Finger Pinch – Go Home

To quickly leave an app and go back to your home screen from anywhere in iOS, place five fingers on your iPad’s screen and pinch them together. This is essentially the same thing as pressing your iPad’s Home button, but this quick gesture can be faster than reaching for a button.
If none of these gestures are working, open the Settings app, tap the General category, and enable the Multitasking Gestures option.

Double-Tap Home – App Switcher

Quickly pressing the Home button twice will also open the app switcher. (The Home button is the one button on the front of the iPad.)
The app switcher shows thumbnails of your recently used apps. Swipe to the left or right to scroll between the apps you’ve recently used and tap one to switch to it. If you want to remove an app from this list, you can touch its preview image and swipe it upwards, moving it off the screen.

Four-Finger Swipe Up – App Switcher

You can also open the app switcher by placing four fingers on your screen and swiping upwards. This provides another way of getting to the app switcher if you find the gesture more convenient.
This gesture can also be revered. Place four fingers on your screen and swipe downwards to leave the app switcher. This will make the app in the center of the app switcher active.

Long-Press Home – Siri

Long-press your Home button from anywhere and the Siri screen will appear, allowing you to perform voice searches and ask questions. Siri will instantly start listening after you long-press the Home button, so you can simply long press it and start speaking.

Swipe Down on Home Screen – Spotlight

From your home screen, place your finger somewhere in the middle of the grid of icons and swipe down to open the Spotlight search feature. Note that you must do this somewhere in the grid of icons; you can’t swipe down from the top of the screen or the notification center will appear instead.
Spotlight allows you to quickly search many different things on your device. For example, you could start typing the name of an app to quickly launch an app rather than hunting for its icon. Spotlight also searches your email, so this is a quick way to find an email without opening your email app and using its built-in search feature. You can also search Google and Wikipedia from here, so this is an easy place to start a web search.

Swipe Down From Top – Notification Center

Swipe down from the top of any screen — whether on the home screen or in an app — and you’ll see the Notification Center. This screen displays push notifications that have appeared on your device, as well as other relevant information such as the current weather and events from your calendar. Grab the handle at the bottom of the screen and swipe upwards — or just press the Home button — to dismiss the Notification Center.

Swipe Up From Bottom – Control Center

Swipe up from the bottom anywhere on your iPad and you’ll see the Control Center. This pane provides easy access to commonly used settings and options. Here, you’ll find everything from music playback controls, volume and brightness sliders, toggles for options like Mute, and shortcuts to the Timer and Camera apps.
Tap anywhere outside the Control Center and it will slide back downwards, off your screen.

You can also wake up your iPad by pressing the home button. You don’t have to reach over and tap the power button every time you want to turn the screen on.

Beginner Geek: How to Host Your Own Website on Windows (WAMP)

Hosting your own website doesn’t have to cost a monthly fee or require a lot of technical knowledge to setup.  If you just need to host a small website that will only have a few visitors, you can turn your Windows PC into a WAMP server.

What is “WAMP”?

WAMP is an acronym that stands for “Windows, Apache, MySQL, and PHP”.  When you download a WAMP, you are just downloading a program that installs three different things.  WAMPs are convenient because they allow you to download and install all of the packages you need for hosting dynamic web content in one fell swoop.  Otherwise, you’d have to download the three packages separately.
Windows – The “W” in WAMP is just there to specify that the program is compatible with Windows operating systems.
Apache – This is the program that is used to actually host your website.  With it alone, you can host HTML files and other static web content.
MySQL – This provides a database for your web content.  A lot of dynamic web pages need to store data (i.e. usernames and password for web accounts), which is where MySQL comes in.
PHP – The most popular language for writing dynamic web content – by far.  WordPress, Facebook, Joomla, and many other websites and content management systems utilize PHP.  If you plan to host anything more than static web pages, PHP will be an essential companion.
If you’re running Linux instead of Windows, you’ll need to install a LAMP.  It’s also possible tohost a website on Windows using IIS so you don’t have to install any third party software.  Going the IIS route isn’t recommended for most purposes and it’s much more of a process to support dynamic web content – so stick with WAMP unless you have a unique circumstance requiring IIS.
Before we proceed, please understand that hosting a website on an everyday PC and a consumer-grade internet connection is not recommended for anything beyond testing purposes and/or hosting a small website for a few visitors.  Remember, the next time Windows Update needs to restart your system, your website goes down along with it – not an ideal situation for a serious website.

Installing WAMP

There are a lot of WAMP programs available, but we’ll be working with WampServer.  Head over to their website and download the latest version of their program, then start the installation.
The installation prompts are self-explanatory; just keep everything at its default value and keep clicking Next.  You can just click Open on this prompt to have WampServer use your default browser whenever you choose to look at your website:
Be sure to also add the security exception for Apache in Windows Firewall:
When the installation completes, check the box that says “Start WampServer 2 now” before hitting Finish.  You should see the program running in your notification area.
Left click on the icon and hit “Localhost” at the top of the selection menu to open your website.
The default page currently just shows us a quick information page so we can confirm that all components are working properly.  If you see this screen, then you’ve successfully installed a WAMP server.

Some Quick Troubleshooting

We did several test installs of this program and found that a few packages from Microsoft are absolutely essential to get WampServer working properly.  If you’ve ran into any trouble up to this point, ensure that you have the following updates installed, uninstall WampServer, restart your PC, and reinstall WampServer.

Further WAMP Configuration

To change the page(s) that your web server displays, open the www directory by left clicking on the WAMP icon in the notification area.
The folder that opens is where you need to put any files that you’d like to host on your website.  Anything from WordPress installation files to static HTML files can be placed in here, and the changes will be reflected on your website at the same time (just click refresh).
Let’s look at a quick example for how you would drop content into that folder for it to be served up on your website.  You can use a web development program or something as simple as Notepad to create a basic PHP page and put it on your website.
The following code will be a good start:
<html>
<head>
<title>PHP Test</title>
</head>
<body>
<?php echo '<p>Hello World</p>'; ?>
</body>
</html>
Paste that code into Notepad and save your file as index.php inside of C:\wamp\www
Now return to your website (or hit refresh [F5] if you already have it opened) and you’ll see the page you just created.
By default, your website is currently only accessible by the computer that WampServer is installed on.  That’s perfect for anyone who’s just using their WAMP server for testing or development purposes, but to make your website accessible to the rest of the world, click on the WampServer icon and click “Put Online”.
By default, the Apache configuration file is set to deny incoming connections from everyone except for the localhost, so you’ll also have to change two lines of code so other devices don’t see a “403 Forbidden” error whenever they try to load your site.  Access httpd.conf (Apache configuration file) by left-clicking the WampServer menu and looking under the Apache folder.
Scroll down until you see some code that says:
Order Deny,Allow
Deny from all
Delete this code and replace it with:
Order Allow,Deny
Allow from all
Save the changes to the httpd.conf and restart all services.
Your site should now be accessible from the World Wide Web.  If not, ensure that you haveforwarded port 80 to your computer on your router.

Wait, Firefox is an Operating System Now? Firefox OS Explained

firefox-os-billboard
Did you know that Mozilla is creating a new operating system built on top of Firefox, dubbed Firefox OS? This isn’t an operating system for your computer — Firefox OS is Mozilla’s attempt at a smartphone OS.
If you keep up on tech news, you’ve probably heard of Firefox OS. if you’re a normal person — or just a busy geek who doesn’t read all the tech news — you may not know much about it yet.

Firefox OS is For Smartphones (and Tablets)

Mozilla’s Firefox OS is a smartphone operating system. It won’t be available on laptops or desktops any time soon. However, Mozilla is planning to release tablets running Firefox OS.
Firefox OS isn’t something you’ll install on your own devices. Instead, it’s an operating system that will come on new devices — you’d pick up a new smartphone or tablet that would run Firefox OS instead of Android, iOS, or Windows.

Why Mozilla is Creating Firefox OS

Mozilla is a non-profit organization dedicated to making the web better, unlike other browser manufacturers — Microsoft, Google, and Apple — who are for-profit corporations. Mozilla sees Firefox OS as important competition in the mobile market.
Mozilla believes in web-based software on the open web, and wants to replace native applications with browser-based ones built on open standards. This is more and more the case on desktops and laptops, where people spend most of the time in their browser. Whether it’s checking email or watching videos, people probably do it in a web browser — and there’s a good chance they’re using Firefox to do it.
However, smartphone and tablet users spend much of their time in native apps. These apps must be written specifically for each platform and are generally distributed in app stores. Apple, Google, and Microsoft all have their own ecosystems with their own apps that will only run on certain operating systems.
Mozilla wants to create a mobile operating system based on web standards, bringing first-class web apps to the mobile world and fighting back against the new trend towards proprietary ecosystems with their own incompatible apps.
zte-firefox-os-smartphone

How Firefox OS is Different

As you might expect given Firefox OS’s name and Mozilla’s vision, Firefox OS doesn’t run traditional “native” apps. Instead, every app on Firefox OS is a web app written in HTML and JavaScript. Much of these apps may run locally, but they’re still written in web technologies.
To accomplish this, Mozilla has added a variety of APIs that allow web apps to interface with hardware features. For example, on Firefox OS, the dialer you use to dial numbers is written entirely in HTML and JavaScript. It runs locally, but is implemented web technologies. You could theoretically “view source” on the dialer to view its code, just as you could view a web page’s source code.
Mozilla provides their own app store in the form of the Firefox Marketplace, which is the official source of Firefox OS apps. Mobile carriers can also set up their own Firefox OS app stores. Web apps could also be accessed from outside the store as typical websites, of course.
Mozilla also wants these apps to be portable. For example, Mozilla creates a full-featured version of Firefox for Android. In theory, you could one day install Firefox for Android and access the Firefox Marketplace to use Firefox OS apps on Android.

Firefox OS has a lot in common with Chrome OS, Google’s browser-centric OS for laptops. Just as everything ultimately runs in Chrome on Chrome OS, everything ultimately runs in Firefox on Firefox OS — even though these apps can run “outside the browser” and be installed locally.

Where Firefox OS is Being Sold

If you’re in North America or Europe, there’s a good reason you haven’t yet heard of Firefox OS. Mozilla is avoiding these markets for now and has been selling cheap, low-end Firefox OS phones in more price-sensitive markets.
The first Firefox OS smartphone is named the ZTE Open, and it’s been made available in places like Spain, Latin America, and India since July 2013. The ZTE Open sells for about $80 without a contract, as opposed to high-end phones like the iPhone 5s that sell for $649 without a contract. Firefox OS phones are just now being launched in other countries throughout Europe, but there are no plans to launch phones in North America yet.
Because Firefox OS is only available on such low-end devices and is so new, it’s unsurprising that it doesn’t offer an amazing experience. Just as cheap, low-end Android smartphones can be laggy and slow in real-world use, the ZTE Open also doesn’t offer particularly amazing performance according to reviewers. Mozilla seems to think it has an opening given Android’s poor performance on low-end phones, but Firefox OS also doesn’t seem to have amazing performance and Google is working hard on optimizing Android, most notably with the big memory requirement reduction in Android 4.4
Don’t hold your breath for Firefox OS. It will be some time before Firefox OS matures and becomes more widely available on a variety of devices in more markets.

Try Firefox OS For Yourself

If you’re really curious about Firefox OS, you can explore it a bit by installing the Firefox OS Simulator add-on for Firefox on your computer. This simulator isn’t perfect, but its goal is to offer a “Firefox OS-like environment that look and feels like a mobile phone,” allowing developers to develop and test apps for Firefox OS.
firefox-os-simulator
If you’re a really crazy geek, you can find Firefox OS builds for the Nexus 4 smartphones online, allowing you to play with it on an actual phone. We wouldn’t recommend this at all — people who have tried it report that various hardware features don’t work and they’ve encountered a variety of crashes. You’re better off using the simulator.

Firefox OS was previously known as “Boot to Gecko” or “B2G” because Firefox OS is a minimal Linux-based system that boots to a platform based on Gecko, Firefox’s rendering engine
